Welcome Home to Canada Program

The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 continues its tradition of welcoming newcomers to Canada.

The Welcome Home to Canada (WHTC) program is a six month employability program for new immigrants to Canada. If you are an unemployed or underemployed immigrant and facing barriers to meaningful employment this program may be an option for you.

We currently have an opening for a Retail and Admissions Sales Associate as part of the 2026 Welcome Home to Canada program. 

Program eligibility

You must be either a permanent resident of Canada, Canadian citizen born outside of Canada (this means you have immigrated to Canada and have become a Canadian citizen) or a protected person as defined in Section 95 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act who is legally entitled to work in Canada and Nova Scotia

AND

You are unemployed or underemployed and facing barriers to employment such as lack of previous Canadian work experience, foreign credentials, language barriers or lack of professional networks.  

Retail and Admissions Sales Associate – Full Time – 37.5 Hours per week
 
SALARY:                      $18 per hour plus 4% vacation pay
 
DURATION:                 Six (6) months from mid April 2026 to mid October 2026. There is the possibility of extending the contract
 
HOURS:                          37.5 hours per week

Position Summary
The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 has an opening for the position of temporary Retail and Admissions Sales Associate.
 
This temporary position is full time for 37.5 hours per week and requires availability across all days of the week, including weekends.
 
This role is expected to start in mid April for a period of 6 months. There is the possibility of extending the contract. 

We are looking for a salesperson who will bring innovation, creativity and enthusiasm to the Pier 21 Boutique team. Under the direction and mentorship of the Retail Manager and Coordinator, your day is spent meeting daily sales goals, becoming an expert on our products, answering customer questions and keeping the sales floor tidy and welcoming. You will also be responsible for welcoming visitors, responding to visitor inquiries and assisting with wayfinding around the Museum.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Attend staff meetings and other Pier 21 information/training sessions
  • Assist customers with the selection of items for sale
  • Complete accurate cash, debit, credit and account sales of Museum tickets and retail products.
  • Process POS opening and end-of-day reconciliation.
  • Open the Boutique at the start of business, secure the Boutique at end-of-day.
  • Responsible for assisting with the receiving, stocking, display and sales of Boutique merchandise
  • Assist with the monitoring of inventory and restocking of shelves
  • Wrapping of customer merchandise
  • Assist with receiving, unpacking and pricing of new merchandise
  • Become knowledgeable about Boutique items available
Skills Required:
  • Ability to interact pleasantly with customers and staff and effectively respond to customer inquiries
  • Previous retail sales experience
  • Intermediate French language skills - the ability to converse comfortably with customers, understand and answer questions and to process sales in the Boutique
  • Ability to provide service during times of high customer volume
  • Ability to follow instructions and work with minimal supervision
  • Web design experience, particularly on the Shopify platform.
